This week we went to sound park studios in Coburg to record a band live to tape. This was the first time any of the class had recorded in this way, but not only was it a great opportunity to learn how to use a tape machine we also experienced for the first time what it was like to be in a real professional studio environment.
We had an interesting band for the project, not your standard 4 piece rock and roll group. We had 10 piece jazz band with 3 horns, drums, double bass, piano, Rhodes, guitar, synth, and percussionist. It really made a difference having such a great band to record as it meant that we just had to hit record and not mess that up.
What I took from the day other than learning how to use tape, was ensuring professionalism while working under pressure. I think the key to this is to keep calm and take things step by step. At sound park there was a lot of patching to be done in order to get the session running, i was helping people do this. I felt that to take things slow without dordling along was key in having a good outcome on the day.
All in all I feel that the day was a huge success, we all learnt a lot from it and can’t wait to head back someday to do some recording.
