Review of remix

The remix project has come to an end, and overall it wasn’t a complete failure. I learnt a lot along the way and figured out that if I want to produce electronic music for a career I probably shouldn’t quit my day job. All in all, I did enjoy making the song even if it didn’t turn out great I still don’t mind listening to it every now and then.

In planning my remix I aimed to go for a 70s industrial vibe. There are some parts which I believe resemble a more modern industrial vibe. Being, the fairly large kick drum which was intentional and I tried to make the sound as big as possible without completely ruining the track, the slow mechanical like nature of the rhythm in the track I believe fits into the industrial genre. The air raid siren-like synth also I believe fits into the genre, also the synth bass. The amount of distortion and resonance added to the vocals is very Trent Reznor esque in my opinion.

I began my track with a few midi tracks containing basic chords and a few ideas for basslines. I then took these into the SAE EMP studio. In the studio, I used the future retro for the growling type sound in the bass, the Nord synth to create the air raid siren chords. I also used the minibrute to add a fuzzy noise type of arpeggiation in the intro.

The bass drum sound was created by mixing two different bass drum sounds together. One of the bass drums I used was very sine wave like which was left unprocessed. The other was just a normal sounding studio bass drum which I ran through a fuzz box simulator to get the large sustain and warm fuzz around it, I then compressed this to where the two blended nicely.

The same idea was behind the creation of the snare sound where one of the snares sounded a bit harsh and trashy, the other had more of a 70s vibe thwack.

Possibly one of my favourite parts of the track is the FM synthesiser arpeggiation in the intro. To create this sound I used operator then once I had a sound I was happy with I used an octave effect to generate the lower octave which makes it sound nice and bouncy.

I have shown my ‘client’ for the remix who was Jan Wong. She said she happy with the way it turned out and that I had done I nice job.

I faced many challenges when doing my remix, perhaps the biggest one was making it sound like a finished piece. By this I mean in general when I showed the class it was very bear and sounded extremely amateur, over the weekend before submission I tried to add more elements in and other effects to blend all the parts together.
