Live Sound Intensive Reflection

That's a wrap. Intensive work for Studio 2 has come to an end and we couldn’t have ended on a better note in my opinion. The live intensive was a challenge for most people in the group, having been the first time any of us have done live sound work. By the time the gig came we all felt confident on the consoles and setting up the equipment, which made everything so much easier on the night.

Personally, I began the night mixing monitors for Victoria Altern’s performance, this was an easy task as there was only one send in use and 2 tracks to send to her monitors. The real challenge for me on the night was getting zenith moon up and running, we didn't have time for a soundcheck or line check with these guys, so we just had to plug everything in and hope for the best and pray that everything worked. Which it did, thank the lord. By the second song, we had them up and running, making adjustments as we went. This was a fun band to mix as I have recorded them in a studio setting and knew where all the hit points in the song were, this enabled me to play with FX on the go bring faders up for different parts of the songs where elements needed to shine. But all in all, I think we did a great job to get them up and running in about 10 minutes with no soundcheck beforehand. One thing I picked up on by the third act was how bad the mix sounded behind the desk where we were sitting compared to in front, something I will definitely do in future is to walk around the venue to make decisions based on where the audience is standing, and not from my own perspective

For the third I was one of the runners, the only thing that happened on my part that was negative was the floor tom falling over before I could get a chance to notice it and react, someone from the previous band had already gone and fixed it up which was what I should’ve done. In the future, if I find myself in that role I will pay more attention to what is happening on stage instead of talking to people.

The crowd turnout was another aspect of the night that caught my surprise. We had a lot more people turn up than what we had anticipated, which was great as this was the one we were worried about.

Everything considered, our group did a magnificent job to pull off a great gig and put on a great show for the audience.
